Are you “Just a Mom?”

Four months ago I posted this question, and today I am reposting it with some changes.  Before I let you read it again I would like to tell you why.

This coming Sunday – and until Thursday- I will have the opportunity to share my heart with moms through a “Tea Time” happening at the same time as the Vacation Bible School at Somerset Hills Baptist Church.

I’m very excited about it because I’ve had this dream to be able to do this for a while, but the door hadn’t been opened until now!  In the process of getting ready for this I have been able to create a curriculum for any church to be able to minister to moms who are believers and especially, non believers.  The first “Tea Time” will be a time to meet and greet, but the second through forth are “Creatures of Law, Order and Beauty”, “How to Teach Your Child to Love the Word of God”, “How to Love Your Husband in Christ”, and last will be a time of reflection, with lots of chocolate and other goodies being served, of course.

The series is intended to give a holistic view of the family through God’s eyes and His intentions for redeeming people back to Him, especially by highlighting the woman’s roll as life giver and manager of her home, and help meet to her husband.

So, without further ado here is part of one of the three sessions that I will be leading a discussion on.  Hopefully, in the future, I will be able to share more of this with those interested in bringing this to their church home.

In the motion picture, “Mom’s Night Out” there is a very intriguing natural event that a couple of the main characters find fascinating.  In the midst of their daily mundane life they are drawn in to a live streaming of the life of a new mother eagle caring for its young.  They seem to almost envy or want to be the calm and seemingly happy bird.

After watching the movie several times now, I have come to the conclusion that maybe the reason why they are drawn to it is because they envy her.  The mama eagle is “just” doing her job and at the same time they are also trying to do theirs, but they don’t know how to find that peace and contentment that this creature has almost mastered.  It seems that they can’t figure out that it is what she was called to do by her creator and that is why she doesn’t appear to be struggling, unlike at least one of them.  (Light bulb moment!)

The mama eagle is being “just a mom”, yet she looks majestic and at the same time content at what she is doing.  She is doing one of the main things she was created to do and she is not wrestling with it.

God has a purpose and a plan for everything He’s created even though we don’t always understand it.  “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:9

How many of us don’t get it?  How many of us struggle with being “just a mom” because we doubt that it is what God called us to do as one of our primary purposes?  He gave us the ability to bring life into this world, yet we sometimes feel like there has to be more to our life than just being a mom.  Isn’t it enough that we hold the future in our hands and have the privilege of molding and shaping them into the image of Christ, like God made us in His image, to reflect Himself to the world?

Moms, I challenge you to not doubt that God has other plans for you, but to first and foremost embrace, like the mama eagle, the present situation that He has enabled you to be in and to truly love the children and spouse that Providence has allowed, by focusing on that “job” first.  Then, as time, energy and providence allows, seek God’s further will in your life by prayer and supplication, what He might have for you to do when the more time consuming years of mothering slow down a bit .

That is how we will find fulfillment in our daily happenings and live the life that He has called us to!

As I watched them watch the bird, I came to realize that there are many moms in similar situations who feel the same way.  They haven’t found what the natural world around us already has, their purpose and acceptance of their role in this world, hence, contentment. Because of that restlessness, we as moms, sometimes end up looking for fulfillment outside of our “nest” at the cost of our babies.  Unfortunately we have also damaged our family life in the process.

But, there is hope!  If we realize that is where we are at, then we can still do something about it.  We can stop and reevaluate our situation and start from there, moving ahead and not looking back.  God’s mercies are new every day!  So let us start afresh!  With God’s help and the empowering of the Holy Spirit we can do that!

This is the metaphor God showed me:

As a mama bird chews on food to mouth feed their babies, we too as moms in the Lord should eat of the living bread and chew on it to make it palatable for our babies to digest it. We are to feed them from our mouth to theirs”.

BUT, what are we chewing on? Are we giving them the proper nutrition? What are some examples of what the world has to offer us and in turn pass on to our children?

During your free time, examine yourself and pray about the changes you need to make to provide a healthier spiritual environment in your physical home. Here are some scriptures to chew on.

Luke 6:45

A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

 Ephesians 4:29

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”

I pray you will be blessed by this insight and use it to love your child with the love of God.

If you’re curious and you want to know more about part one of the 3 part series, post a comment, and I will get back to you as soon as the Lord allows me to.

In the trenches of mothering with you,

We have been in New Jersey for three months now.  Time sure is flying!  So, I want to share some pictures of the last weekend, as I promised in the last blog, of our recent family adventure.

We were blessed by having very good friends come to visit us from Colorado!  We took advantage of the situation and decided to tag-along with them on their trip to Washington D.C.. From there we went our separate ways.  We went on to Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia to see and experience history come to life!

It was a very fun packed weekend.  Too much to share everything here.  SO, to see more photos and a recently posted video of all our family in the mud, preparing to make bricks for historical Williamsburg town buildings and roads, go to http://www.socorrogill.com/education.html .  I’ll be slowly adding more photos, so check every day to see what has changed, if you’re…
